Harkin: TEIA to Receive $26.6M for Improvements

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nov. 14, 2007 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that Cedar Rapids’ Eastern Iowa Airport will receive $26.6 million over the next few years to completely rehabilitate runway 9/27 and associated taxiways. These funds will be made available by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which issued a letter of intent today pledging this funding would come through.

This year, only four other airports around the country will receive this type of funding. Harkin is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“I congratulate Eastern Iowa Airport on receiving this funding, which will enable it to move forward with an important runway rehabilitation project without causing major disruptions for travelers,” Harkin said. “Investing in improvements to Eastern Iowa Airport’s facilities is key to ensuring people and businesses can easily access the Cedar Rapids area.”

"This Letter of Intent allows us to totally reconstruct the primary runway without shutting down the airport, so it does not negatively impact our travelers or tenants,” Dan Mann, Director of Eastern Iowa Airport said.

Eastern Iowa Airport has already received $13.2 million from the FAA for this project. The new funding ensures that the airport can move forward with this major improvement project without worrying about delays in funding.
